If you haven't already read Eduardo Peñalver's latest post on dotCommonweal, I certainly recommend that you do. He applies the teaching of the magisterium regarding the death penalty to the Saddam Hussein execution, and it's quite interesting.

Here's an interesting opinion piece by Andrew Cockburn about the U.S. government's support of Saddam Hussein. The content isn't what makes it interesting -- anyone familiar with the recent history of the region knows everything in it already. What's interesting is that it's in the L.A. Times. It's not exactly a conservative paper, but this kind of honest reflection doesn't make it's way into the mainstream American news media very often. At least not in recent years.

Some people have too much time on their hands...

Funny story about a rather ambitious protest in France. What made it so ambitious, you ask? Well, they were saying "non" to 2007. Imagine, protesting the passage of time. That raises some very interesting philosophical questions, but I'm too tired to pursue that right now.

This is just wrong...

You may have heard about the 67 year-old woman in Spain who gave birth to twins a few days ago. When I saw the headline I thought, "oh, the poor woman, what an unfortunate accident!" (Not my exact words.)

But no. Astonishingly, she was impregnated by in vitro fertilisation. Nothing accidental about that.

I have difficulty imagining a woman in her 80s having the energy to raise teenagers, which is what is going to happen, assuming she lives that long. I can't imagine what she was thinking.
